Tarnamid (PA6)/Alphalon (PA6) – polyamide 6

Polyamide is a product of caprolactam polycondensation.
A crystalline plastic. Density: 1.13 g/cm3. Melting point: approximately 220°C. A polymer with good mechanical properties, high tensile strength, abrasion resistance and low coefficient of friction. Shape stability at higher temperatures. Resistance to gasoline and solvents. High moisture absorption (2.5-2.8 %). Electrical properties strongly dependent on the moisture content. Exhibits creep when cold. Polyamides reinforced with glass fibre: increased specific gravity (up to 1.60 g/cm3), very high stiffness, higher creep resistance, and high dimensional stability.
In every case, it is advisable to dry the polyamide before processing - permissible moisture content for processing <0.2%. Drying temperature is in the range of 80-110°C. Tarnamid (PA6) has a relatively high thermal stability; however, when the temperature exceeds 310°C relatively quick thermal decomposition of the polymer takes place in the form of: carbon monoxide, ammonia, caprolactam, etc.
In order to achieve the desired properties of the polymer, appropriate modifications of Tarnamid can be made by adding glass fibre, glass beads, colorants, minerals, slip as well as antistatic additives and many others in a process known as compounding.
